Use Career Development Planning To Maximize Your income

Career development planning should be a high priority if being gainfully employed is one of the options you've chosen to earn income. Create a career development plan for yourself in your chosen field and don't leave it to your employer to arbitrarily determine the amount of compensation that you receive for the work that you do. It will always be important for you to consistently optimize your salary or hourly wage level. You should assertively influence your earnings by:

1. Setting attainable earnings goals and proactively negotiating your compensation if you are interviewing as a potential new hire. Of course this negotiation starts after you have been chosen for the position and the offer is on the table.

2. As an employee, excel in executing your job responsibilities in order to: a. receive the maximum allowable annual salary increases and b. always be in a preferred position for promotion at the earliest opportunity.

Again, key elements in your career development planning are seeking the highest pay that you can achieve within your job category as well as seeking regular promotions to higher salary grade levels. It is certainly possible for you to experience hitting a pay grade and/or a career advancement ceiling with a particular employer. If this happens and you want to honor your standing goal of earning the highest possible compensation within your job category, it is probably time to make a change. The good news is that you will have the luxury of mounting a voluntary job search while still drawing a salary. This does not mean that you can launch a lackluster, part-time search! Approach this project with the same ambition you displayed in reaching you current job level. Let a successful job search set the stage for you to become a star in you new company.

In summary, support your goal of always earning the maximum salary available to you in your job category by implementing your career development plan. strive to perform at a high level and understand what is required to get excellent employee performance reviews and also what is required to be considered for promotion. Plan to be promoted! If you "max-out" your salary and advancement potential with a company, consider finding a new job. Lastly, maintain a career development plan to serve as the blueprint for your actions.

Whether you are looking for your first job or a "better job", the ticket to success is executing a well conceived career development plan.
